Harper On Child Care

Harpernomics Says

“The Liberals and the NDP believe that the only answer to expanding childcare in Canada is their one-size-fits-all plan to build a massive childcare bureaucracy which will benefit only a small percentage of Canadians. Only the Conservatives believe in freedom of choice in child care. The best role for government is to let parents choose what’s best for their children, and provide parents with the resources to balance work and family life as they see fit – whether that means formal child care, informal care through neighbours or relatives, or a parent staying at home.”

The Reality Is...

A report released earlier this year confirms that almost 51,000 new child care spots were opened each year between 2001 and 2004 when the Liberals were in power, but less than half that number were created in 2006.

Federal transfers for early education and child care were slashed by $750 million annually when the Conservative government cancelled the agreements made with the provinces in 2005.

The Harper Conservatives have broken their promise to create 125,000 new spaces.

“The face value (of $1,200) ... is an illusion: the scheme's true value for the vast majority of Canadian families would be less than that _ considerably less, in many cases. It's a pretty blunt and ineffective instrument … It does end up benefiting one-income and higher income families the most.''
