Harper On The Auto Sector
Harpernomics Says
“Mr. Flaherty rejected such an approach yesterday, arguing it would be tantamount to having governments choose winners and losers … Bailing out individual industries - such as the auto sector - "is just the kind of protectionism that hurts trade and kills jobs."
The Globe and Mail: February 21, 2008
"Where we differ from some of the opposition is our avoidance of Band-Aid, ad hoc solutions for particular companies. History tells us how wasteful and inefficient those measures are."
Jim Flaherty, Toronto Star, January 24, 2008
The Reality Is...
After ignoring the auto sector for 30 months, Harper suddenly announces last-minute funding announcements for Ford and GM just days before he knows he’s going to call an election and long after the damage has been done.
“Harper and his government have completely ignored the manufacturing sector but now they’re calling an election and all of a sudden they want to be seen to be doing something. One can’t help but be cynical.”
Buzz Hargrove, Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) President, Canadian Press, September 3, 2008
“What would the direction of this government be … if, in fact, Mr. Harper is re-elected? A government that does one thing while in office and then the complete opposite thing while running for re-election has a credibility problem, and I’m not sure many Ontarians in the auto belt really believe who they saw today was the real Stephen Harper.
What we need now instead of an election trick (is) a firm policy kept in place for a long period of time that will help us rebuild this industry, and I’m not sure Mr. Harper’s government will do that.”
