"We're not in the pothole business in the government of Canada … These are realities. Rather than ... quite frankly, whining, they should access the money that's available. It's there. Get on with the job and get the job done."
Jim Flaherty, Toronto Star, November 22, 2007
At the same time Flaherty was saying this, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities released a report saying that Canada’s infrastructure deficit had risen to $123 billion.
“Calling municipal governments ‘whiners’ for calling attention to the pressing needs hurting their communities and their residents is an obvious attempt to diminish the importance of municipal issues and the concerns of Canadians … The infrastructure deficit in our cities and communities is a national problem. It requires national leadership. That's the job of the federal government.”
Gord Steeves, President, Federation of Canadian Municipalities, November 22, 2007
